Pinochle (pronounced “pea-knuckle”) is a clever card game that feels like a mix between a matching game and a tactical battle. It uses a special deck of 48 cards where the cards 2 through 8 are removed, leaving you with two of every High Card (Aces, Kings, Queens, Jacks, Tens, and Nines).
The game is played in two parts:
- The Match (Melding): You score points by showing certain “teams” of cards in your hand, like having a King and Queen of the same suit. The most famous pair is the Queen of Spades and the Jack of Diamonds—that’s called a “Pinochle!”
- The Battle (Trick-taking): After showing your matches, you play your cards in rounds to try and win “tricks” by laying down the highest card. You have to think ahead to save your best cards for the right moment.
